In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, missionaries headed for Manila traveled aboard freighters. The 12-passenger ships carried their passengers' possessions in 55-gallon drums in the hold. This transparency shows a crew member painting the aft masts as the China Bear, carrying the Bowman, lumbered at about 17 knots through the Pacific Ocean in August of 1949. The trip took around three weeks from the West Coast of the USA.
